“Role models inspire you by showing you what is possible with their own example.”– Mariela Dabbah
When you’re feeling stuck in life, whether it’s being down, unmotivated, stressed, or worried, I find a good technique to get yourself through these challenging times is to envision what your role model would do in your situation. Asking yourself “what would my role model do?” is empowering and it can help you to see a way out of how you’re feeling, and move you into a more optimistic mindset.
You may be feeling self-conscious about yourself, being bullied by peers or your boss, or you may just feel down and worthless and that you won’t get anywhere in life. Everyone has been through struggles that you may not know about, even your role models haven’t always had an easy road and it takes a lot of dedication and hard work to get to their status.
It’s important to find yourself a positive role model in your life, whether it’s someone you know, a celebrity, or a successful business owner. You can have different role models for the different areas of your life you want to improve; you could look up to different people for your health and fitness goals, career, relationships, mental health, positivity, etc. You should choose people who are either optimistic, kind, positive, respectable, hard-working, confident, successful, unique, good at communicating, well-rounded, empathetic, etc, or a combination of these positive traits.
My role model is Dwayne Johnson, I loved watching wrestling when I was growing up, which helps, but as I’ve grown older, I’ve learned more about him as a person and just how inspirational he is. He suffered from depression, was dropped by the career of his dreams (professional football), and was told by his dad that he was throwing his life away by following his new passion for wrestling. But look at him now! He’s an amazing role model, he’s dedicated, hardworking, one of the best wrestlers in history, and a successful and famous Hollywood actor, he has a loving family, and a string of businesses, is inspirational, and is a kind and positive person.
Think of people in your life who inspire you to do and be better or look up to famous people who have the qualities that you want to strengthen within yourself or work towards achieving.
When you think about what would your role model would do you will…
Have More Motivation
If you’re feeling lethargic or unmotivated, envisioning what your role model would do in your situation is a great way of giving you the push you need to pursue your goals and dreams. If you have a positive role model in your life that you aspire to be more like, this can give you the motivation you need to do that workout, start planning your next career move, or follow your dreams because every positive step you take, gets you one step closer to becoming the person you want to be.
Become More Confident
If you’re feeling like you can’t do something in your life or you’re feeling bad about yourself, thinking about what your role model would do will make you feel instantly more confident within yourself. Picture yourself as them in that situation and then act as they would, it’s the same principle as faking it before you make it. You may not feel confident in the situation at all but if you step into their mindset and shoes, this can give you the boost of confidence that you need to tackle the awkward or scary situation.
Make Better Decisions/Choices
You will always be confronted with bad options in life and tempted to do things that aren’t beneficial to improving yourself and your circumstances in life. It’s so much easier to give in and eat unhealthily, laze around playing video games with your friends, get drunk instead of working on your business plan, or do even worse things like selling/taking drugs, stealing, or harming others.
If you envision your role model and the traits they possess, it shows you what you desire for yourself and how you want to live a positive and happy lifestyle like they do. If you base your decisions around this ideal then you will make the right decisions in life and be on the right track. If you act the way your role model would do, then it will give you a more positive outlook on life and it will give you better morals and a good influence in your life to achieve and be more. This will help to shape your actions positively and help you to become a better person.
Achieve More
When you start adopting the positive traits that your role model possesses, you will begin to notice that you push yourself to do better and achieve more in your life. Acting as your ideal will inspire you to work harder on yourself and your goals and will lead to more positive outcomes in your life.
When you look up to somebody successful it will show you where hard work, dedication, and perseverance will get you in the future. It helps you to put things into perspective and shows you that they worked hard to get where they are now but it’s worth the journey and hard work. When you put yourself in your role models’ shoes and learn how to embody their character traits and apply them to yourself and your life, you will become more successful and learn to overcome obstacles by learning from their mistakes.
Become More Positive
You may be stuck in a rut or feel like you’ll never achieve the things that you want to because you feel unmotivated and have low self-esteem. Looking up to a positive role model will help you to see that you can be happy and successful if you try. Taking the first steps to improve yourself and your life and adopting positive personality traits, will help you to become happier and more positive.
When you respect and look up to someone who is a positive influence, it gives you the courage and strength to follow their steps and work hard to get to where you want to be in life. They show you what is possible for anyone who tries and works at improving themselves inside and out. Once you start making yourself a priority and work towards improving your mind, body, and life, you will become more positive and happier in yourself because you too can be happy, successful, and in control like your role models.
Next time you feel yourself at a loss or questioning your capabilities in life, simply put yourself in your role model’s shoes and ask yourself what they would do in this situation. Work towards embodying the traits that your ideal self would possess, and slowly over time you will see a massive shift in your confidence, self-esteem, and your achievements.
You can follow your role model on social media to keep yourself motivated and it’s important to keep reaching for the top in life because you can honestly achieve anything you set out to do. Remember, your role model was just like you one day, they are only human and they have worked their way to the top. Anything is possible if you set your mind to it, so don’t give up on yourself and your goals.
