face your fears

We are all afraid of something. Whether it’s heights, going on roller-coasters, spiders, death, flying, clowns, giving a speech, or swimming, everyone has something that they fear. Facing your fears is a super empowering and releasing feeling. You can choose to live in fear all your life or you can decide to face your fears and conquer them.

Fear holds us back from experiencing life to the fullest and it limits us reaching our full potential. If you let your fears rule your life then you have no room for growth or reaching new limits in your life.

Fear is only in your mind and you can learn to train your mind to overcome your fears and be free of them once and for all. Everyone is different and has differing levels of fear. However, by slowly increasing your exposure to your fear, instead of running away from it, you will learn to overcome it in time.

Here are just a few techniques that you can try to incorporate into your life to start overcoming your fears…

Meditation and Hypnosis

I used to have a massive phobia of death. I would give myself panic attacks and find it hard to go to sleep at night sometimes if I thought about it.

Once I decided that I needed to start getting over my fear of dying, I started to research ways to get over my fear. I discovered a meditation on YouTube that directly tackled my fear of dying and where it stemmed from.

I also used meditation and hypnosis apps to help me calm my mind. They helped me to switch off and stop obsessing about dying.

You can use hypnosis and meditation for any fears that you have. Furthermore, you will find that there are a lot of free tools you can use, on apps and online. These can help you face your phobia, whatever it is.

Learn More About Your Phobia

The next step is to learn more about your fears and if they’re as bad as you suspect or if they’re irrational. Educating yourself about your fears will help you to see that we often big things up in our minds. We make them seem worse than what they actually are.

Many people are afraid of flying but if you look at the statistics you’re far more likely to die in your car, on a train, or a bus than you are in a plane. Look at your fears from an objective view and learn more about the possibility of your fears coming true. This can help you to see that 9/10 of your fears are irrational and in your head.

Slowly Introduce the Fear into Your Life

Introducing your fear slowly into your life is the next step on the road to overcoming your phobias. If you’re afraid of clowns, for example, you could start overcoming your fears by simply talking about them. This will enable you to get yourself used to opening up about your fears.

Next, you could start looking at photographs or illustrations of clowns. Then build up to watching a clown on television. You could then expose yourself to a real-life clown but from a distance. Slowly you could move closer and closer, until one day you’re able to touch the clown.

This can be a long process and everyone is different. However, slowly increasing your exposure to your fear, will eventually help you to learn to let go of your fear. You’ll begin to realise in time that your fear is irrational. No harm will come to you by embracing and facing your phobia.

This technique works with all phobias and is an amazing way to get over your fears.

Ask Yourself What’s the Worst That Could Happen?

When you’re about to expose yourself to your phobia, a great mindset to adopt is “What’s the worst that could happen?”. If you mentally prepare for the worst possible outcome, which is rarely going to happen, you’ll begin to realise that your fear is in your head.

What’s the worst thing that could happen if you gave that speech or got on the roller-coaster? The worst-case scenario is just a projection of your biggest fears. It isn’t the reality of the situation or what is going to happen.

You need to learn to let go of this mentality and focus on all the things that could go right and how good it would feel once you’ve overcome your fears.

Start Pushing Yourself to Face Your Fear

You’ll never be free of your fears unless you start pushing yourself to face them more and more often.

Use breathing and calming techniques before you are faced with your fears and think about the positive outcomes that will come from being free of your phobia.

You get what you project out into the world. So, if you tell yourself, you’re calm and in control of the situation, then you will have a positive outcome.

Remember that fear is only in the brain and you can learn to overcome your thoughts and how you see the world. Focus on the best possible outcomes and ask yourself “What’s the best thing that could happen?”.

This will help to change your mindset and focus on all the good that could come with facing your fears. You could… travel more, be less stressed and anxious, not be afraid to jump off the boat on holiday, progress in your career because of your amazing speech, let go and have fun at the theme park, etc.
