new year's resolutions

How many New Year’s resolutions have you honestly kept over the years!? Most people create unrealistic, restrictive and depressing goals heading into the new year. They create resolutions to either punish themselves for enjoying the Christmas festivities or to “finally get their life in order”.

We promise to never eat snacks again, workout every day, drink three litres of water a day, go to bed at 9pm every night and never touch alcohol again. Only to quit a few days or weeks later. This makes us feel like a total failure and starts our year with disappointment in ourselves and feeling like we’ll never change!

Why New Year’s Resolutions Don’t Work

The truth is… New Year’s resolutions basically never work! We are human, and we don’t like being restricted of the things we love and enjoy in life. When you tell yourself you can’t have something, it’s human nature to want that thing more.

Likewise, it’s common for people to give up on their goals entirely because they’ve had a slip up, instead of starting again the next day. They see their slip up as a failure and a sign to give up on their goals. Rather than realising that long-lasting change takes time and effort.

The key to success is small changes, consistently over time, and as cliché as it sounds, we only live once. We deserve to enjoy ourselves and have balance across all areas of our life!

There’s no fun in never fully living or indulging once in a while. The secret to a life of fulfillment is working on improving yourself a little each day, whilst learning to love where you currently are, and embracing the ups and downs of pursuing your goals!

This year why not do something refreshing and ditch the New Year’s resolutions!? Go into this new year with the focus of becoming the happiest and healthiest version of yourself possible! Practice more self-love, gratitude and pro-activeness with your goals. But take it a day at a time, and don’t punish yourself for those days when you need a little TLC and relaxation.

No one is perfect all the time, all we can do is try and be better than the day before and do our best with each day that comes, without the pressure of perfection. Some days the best we can do is make it through the day, and that’s OK!
