You may think that the question “Where do you want to be in five years?” is a cliché question that you get asked in interviews. However, it’s important to ask yourself where you want to go in life. In reality, it’s so easy to get caught up in everyday life. Often, we get stuck in jobs or relationships that we don’t really want to be in because we become complacent. Therefore, we don’t stop to think and get to the core of what we truly want out of our lives. However, creating a 5 year plan will help you to succeed in life and help you to focus on your wants and needs.
You might know what you want deep down. However, having a dream isn’t going to help you reach it unless you take steps daily to achieve your goals.
You need to ask yourself every day “Is what I’m doing today getting me closer to where I want to be tomorrow?”. If the answer is yes, then great continue on your journey. However, if you answer no, then you need to figure out what you want and how you’re going to get there. Otherwise, you’re going to waste time mindlessly going through a life you don’t want to live. Ultimately, asking yourself this question will help you stay on track and ensure that your actions align with your goals.
Take some time for yourself to sit down and really reflect on what you want. By doing so, you’ll gain clarity on how you envision your life in five years. This process will enable you to see what’s truly important to you and, as a result, guide you in determining how you should be spending your time moving forward.
How to Figure Out What You Want
Here are a few journaling prompts that will help you figure out where you want to be in five years…
- How do I want to feel?
- What job do I want?
- How do I want to act?
- Do I want to be my own boss or work for someone else?
- How much money do I want to earn?
- Where do I want to live?
- How much do I want to have in savings?
- What do I want my relationships to look like?
- What emotions do I want to feel about myself?
- How do I want to spend my days?
Once you’ve taken some time to answer the questions truly (don’t be afraid to think big!) then you just need to figure out what you can do to get there.
How to Get to Where You Want to Be
Ask yourself…
- How am I going to get there?
- What’s my plan to achieve these goals and feelings?
- What do I need to change?
- What can I do differently today to get me closer to my goals?
- Who do I need to become to have these things?
- What habits do I need to let go of?
- Which new habits can I create to help me reach my goals?
- What am I doing today that’s getting me closer to achieving everything I want?
- Am I acting and feeling how I want to be in my future?
- How will my life look like when I achieve these goals? How will that make me feel?
Create a Vision Board
An amazing way to reach your big goals is to create a vision board with images and affirmations to remind you of where you want your life to go. Looking at your vision board daily will help to keep you on track with your goals. In doing so, you will see how your life can be if you keep pushing forward on your self-development journey and pursuing your goals.
Envision yourself having everything you want already in your life and feel how good this would make you feel. As you do this, keep working towards your goals and improving yourself daily and you will get there.
You can and will achieve everything you want in life if you work towards it every day and believe that all the things you want are attainable.
“Picture yourself five years from now. Where do you want to be? Remember that. Every day. That’s how you’ll get there.”– Mary E. Pearson
Summary
Time goes faster than you think. So, it’s powerful to make a conscious effort to review your five-year goals every morning when you wake up and before you go to bed.
This will help to keep your goals at the forefront of your brain. This will enable you to make better choices and steps forward in your life to reach your goals.
Set yourself deadlines for what you want to achieve each year, month, week, and day. As a result, you’ll soon find that you’re getting closer to who you want to be and what you want to have. Furthermore, having a five-year plan will also help you to stop sweating the small stuff in life.
Additionally, another great technique I use if I’m feeling overwhelmed or stressed with something currently is to think about if what I’m upset about now is even going to matter in the future. Remember, if it’s not going to matter next year then it’s not going to matter in 5 years. So, I make a conscious decision to release my feelings on the situation and to move forward with my goals. Moreover, I start to focus on how I want to feel and how I want to react to things.
